Heat lighting? Do you mean when heat blurs stuff around it like on the top of a hot road type thing? If so you could try using a transparent wavy type material and assign scrolling UV's to it so it generates the impression of heat shimmers -

yeah the base head was very wide too( modelled by one of the leads ) It would have been too hard to change the proportions too much because of the facial rig. The facial colours were set by the lead too and they were pretty much monochrome colours. -
