Or you can do it with creasing, if it is supported further in your workflow. ( If you just want to render in MentalRay no problem, if you want to take it to an engine or another renderer argh ) I always use creasing when I can for this type of problem because it is soooooo much easier. -

I've seen the starwars demo at GDC. The quality of the reflections is noticeably lower than a rendered image. It was explained to me that the rays-per-pixel is actually quite low compared to something like mentalray. -

Yes - when I make things for an offline renderer (like mentalray) I don't use nearly as many unique painted textures. It's all about blending together tiled textures in various ways. -

Right, Malcolm, true, Maya is not easy at first eyes for baking, you might will get pissed sometimes, but I tell you MentalRay has one of the best AO I've ever seen. But if you want easy solution and still wants inside Maya, Turtle is the right path. -

Well, I'm no expert in Maya, so I can't really diagnose what's going wrong. Except, have you tried another renderer besides mentalray? Also, that same site has this for download, might work better: http://thefulldomeblog.com/2013/11/13/background-stars-v2/
