well the main problem is maya only supports opengl while max supports direct3d, software and opengl acceleration. the developers of max suported both game dev and vfx industries while developers of maya havent been paying that much attention to game dev until recently.

Going to finish off the attack animation for this character then start modelling the next environment which will be a forest style scene, then I will get into VFX which I haven't done in Unity before so it will be a big learning curve.
There are some pretty rough example files if you do a thorough search for 3d scanning devices and services, but the real quality stuff that movie VFX studios use isn't really available anywhere, not even for demo purposes.
Still cant really decide on my composition, but I think the lighting is coming along nicely. With the deadline extension I am goanna try to get in some more vfx like dust particles and god rays :)
Rikk The Gaijin DDS is most common format for games, no wonder that some people in industry dont know about it because they work in VFX, Architectural Rendering or other. So dont judge from one point of view.

very inspiring work. dX11 tessellation is amazingly fast in viewport. I m beginning to wonder if why movie/TV vfx is not using realtime solutions more. I think they save so much more time.
Maya is not bundled only with max. while max is bundled in all suites. As you mentioned, Maya may rule feature vfx world. That market is peanut compare to other markets. 3mil active maya lic? no way.
