Was too lazy on this one, his left eye is a bit flat. Not saying this as an excuse but the source image wasn't fantastic either. Seeing as I am working in grey scale I think I might find it easier when I draw statues.
I would love a poly count meet! We should really set a date in order to get a proper headcount. Hang on: http://twitter.com/polycount/status/10750159853 Maybe if the site gets finished in time we can make it a celebratory meet?
The really big studios might have a couple cool statues up front, and maybe a cafeteria, gym, and fancy break room, but once you get passed that they're also big rooms full of computers with a couple tiny offices for higher-ups.
So I completely forgot to update this with what I was doing. So here is where I'm at currently. It doesn't have to look exactly like the reference, just needs to be close and look nice. Statue is WIP and this is just a quick screengrab from the editor.
Can't wait to see this. I would agree with doing a helmet first. Also it would be cool to do some casts of these. I have the Halo 3 Master Chief mini busts from Gentle Giant. Awesome stuff and the Koto statues are sweet.

The statues holding the lamps are in an awkward pose; placing the base at their feet would probably seem more natural. Something like this would work: An open brazier, rather than a closed lantern, would provide more visual interest.
Your business major will probably be a fantastic asset anyways, since it will help you navigate taxes, issues related to freelancer status, and so on. All this is pretty much vital and as far as I am aware is not taught at art schools.
sweet! I"m a cautiously optimistic blender fan. I've never actually used it for anything, but I have a peek at the status every now and again. It's really becoming a great tool, and can't wait for the next year or two.
