Nonsense, some people are just born with an innate understanding of modern weaponry, just like others are born with the gift of understanding anatomy. That link BeardedMike posted is gold! Try not to get too intimidated with PBR, its really not too different from earlier rendering practices, just the texture maps are slightly different. Since you're still new to PBR and texturing I think adding Substance into the mix is too much to learn at one time. Get more comfortable… -

I've just graduated, and to be honest your works probably average for where your at. All I can suggest is don't rush yourself; University merely touches upon the 3D world because the courses are so broad. Ideally you should spend your spare time practicing and realistically find what your good at/passionate about and stick… -

Im with Racer. Visualizing in 2D is harder than in 3D, honestly. You have to think about many many more things when drawing something (that isnt a doodle) than you do when sculpting or modeling it. Well you can always draw on a pad with traditional art tools and then scan it in, or if you have an nice wacom just do it all in photoshop.
