Blender doesn't appear to be able to select only a portion of a face in wireframe mode, in this case you have to switch to solid. Also, you are trying to select only visible elements, so, wireframe mode is not really the mode you want to be on while doing that.

@FrankPolygon Thanks for replying. I just learned that i don't need the viewport on shade smooth. I can leave it at flat shading then select my faces ALT+N and select merge or split to have smooth or hard edges. almost the same as Maya.
A few more questions: Is there a way to lock selection like in Max(spacebar hotkey)? I use that feature all the time and kinda miss it. Is there something like the max symmetry modifier in blender? Is there really no backface selection with solid shading? @musashidan thanks, that's a great help.

Amazing stuff! @"Michael Knubben" I tried my luck with just Quick Favorites and added a continuous animation for the UV. Selecting one Modifier and copying it over to other meshes works. Would love to see a PME version.
