Im trying to model that wooden part, but I wasnt able to create it without having still a nice and smooth rounded shape at the end. Especially the part where the barrel is, I cant get that 90° edge there.
Need some more loops on the lonely loop on the inside. I bet if you carried the loops on the topside around the front and to the underside it would create some nice edge flow and help smooth out the inside.
I was just being dumb and tried to create something in the most unproductive manner possible. The question was already answered by WAYWO (and the million other threads/images before that) and I felt like posting something dumb.
Retopo one section. Create spline to match tread, copy along spline. Followup question: How is that going to be animated? Bones? Texture/UV animation? That can help inform your modeling/baking also.

It looks like you're on the right path. The two basic components are the path the strap will deform along and the duplicated segment that makes up the strap's mesh.
