Oh sorry! I think the solution had to do with me not having both sides of the archway snapped to the grid

@noNaim Your grid appears to be relatively normal. Are you working in something other than centimeters for the maya units?

yeah for snapping there is a tool in max, the little magnet in the tools bar you can snap on the grid or on the vertex/edge

@dogzer : hair was done just using numerous transparent grid planes, with an anistropic shader. @pedro : it is currently an unannounced title.
