yea, you have to have your object selected and press 'Z' every 5 seconds or else it goes crazy. -

Use the transform hotkeys!! G, R, S, X, Y, and Z. Blender's manipulators are way too fiddly to be useful. -

Maybe select the landscape and change by "Display" the Z-Modifier. With luck your raw file has more deep information. -
