If you're a student and only using this for educational purposes then I would suggest just using a student license from autodesk, all of their programs are available for free to students, you just need to specify your school. Sculptris is a useful intro to digital sculpting and nice for sketching but it is too limited in…
If this is true then it's likely to be an error in the actual command. Maybe whoever coded it had a reason to set the cap to 0.25 - who knows? You will eventually stumble upon commands that behave weird like this, especially as you do more and more coding. There isn't much to do about it other than either work around it or…
Thanks for the help! I was using an mr Area Omni (didn't know that was a legacy light). In any case, yeah, leaving the gamma at 2.2 causes the error (where the light shines only at an angle, not in all directions) but setting it at Autodesk View LUT fixes it. It also fixed the mirrored face error. Here is a screenshot.…
A complex mesh like this should never be baked as a whole. Keyframes, or edit poly modifier, either will do the job just fine. If you want to watch how to explode a mesh for baking, check this video out: http://cg.tutsplus.com/tutorials/autodesk-3d-studio-max/how-to-bake-a-flawless-normal-map-in-3ds-max/
Softimage would only be practical to start learning if you want to work at a Japanese studio or a studio that currently uses Softimage. It's actually a great package, a nice mix of Maya and 3ds Max, but sadly didn't have a large enough user base, and Autodesk pretty much bought it and let it slowly die before they killed…
if only autodesk actually did implement byron's chamfer.... /rolleyes also, solid chamfer is a pretty useful functionality for subdivs which I believe is not in maya. too bad for whatever reason, bpt's chamfer crashes my maya badly (2009 64b) :( anyway, talking about maya's bevel just makes me angry :)
You can bake shitloads of cool things. It's made so that it's easy to integrate in your pipeline and I think you can bake synced normal maps with it, if you code it that is. I know that DICE used it for mirrors edge in UDK for example. It's a little company in Gothenburg, Sweden that got bought up by Autodesk some years…
Unfortunately, there really isn't very much available on the topic of shaders in 3ds Max. Almost everything is in that thread that Eric posted. I had to learn most of what I know by trial and error and by sending emails directly to Autodesk. The example shaders that ship with Max also help, but overall it's kinda…
@Acumen When exporting, Balancer saves the smoothing data using the normal themselves. Perhaps meanwhile this workaround may be helpful to reconstruct the smoothing groups data in 3ds max:…
