But i think it looks lumpy right now, so its not reading right. venusaur would prob be a bit thicker skinned, but not really lumpy, it makes it read as fat. Create custom cage and move its vertices which above your particular detail into position, where their vector from original vertex to cage vertex will match the desired view angle. That should work. As @gnoop said, cage vertex position matters as they define vector of raycast. -

The answer to all the questions is 'it depends' To answer the questions yourself: build it (rough) look at what you built, work out the optimal* way to build it build it again properly * defining optimal is difficult: for a portfolio piece it basically means 'most convenient', for a given game project it depends a lot on… -

Exactly what level of hand holding do you require? It shouldn't be difficult to find beginner-level information on the internet for this. The defining characteristic of a base mesh is that it's to be used for something else, so it generally has a lower level of detail, and simpler topology that would support being altered… -

Golden rule of sculpting (and most other art really): Get the big shapes correct first then refine, refine, refine. Really good likeness's. Whether its caricature, photo real or stylised only comes with A LOT of practice and plenty of good reference from many angles. -
