I am having a problem baking with xNormal atm. To the left I have the bake from 3ds max, which turned out fine (ignore the weird bumpy edges, it was caused by a bad highpoly that i fixed later). I noticed some weird errors when baking a normal map from two fbx files exported with 3ds max 2015. Not sure if it has something to do with max being 2015. Never had any serious issues before. If you use 3dsmax you can put a Projection modifier on the top of the stack and export as .SBM with the "Export cage" option enabled. that will use an averaged cage.
