That's actually a kickass idea. It reminds me of the promises WAR online kind of failed to implement. In WAR there was so many amazing (in my opinion) options to have such a distinguishable character, for example, the beer keg on the beared of a Dwarf. [MAYA] Creating a normal map with rounded corners of a low poly model without baking high poly
I once used a script that transferred the selected edges and maya to photoshop, creating a ready-made normal map with rounded edges. Has anyone seen anything like this? (I tried Quixel Suite/nDo, but they didn't give me what I needed...) -

Personally I'd drop the latest surface detail in favour of the earlier version where it was subtler. That way you aren't bombarding the viewer with too much detail and instead they can take in the whole character and have little point of interest such as the spots on the chin and wrinkles around the armpit.
