:poly118: Well, no matter what I do, I always end up getting the same result.... I'm using a high res texture off CG Texture's Website. Here is my Mesh with a checkered pattern on it. The texel density isn't that bad is it?
Warning: shameless plug You can try my tutorials are CG Cookie, http://cgcookie.com/blender I also did a transition DVD meant for experienced artists that want to learn Blender: http://www.blender3d.org/e-shop/product_info_n.php?products_id=151
About the recent concept art look - Maybe it is just because of an overall better understanding of light behavior and properties ? This change is also happening amongst CG artists gradually adopting linear workflows. Maybe it goes both ways, one influencing the other ...
Its interesting for sure! Reminds me a lot of some of the mid 1990's cg videos from the Mind's Eye series. Not too sure how 'workable' this stuff would be for games though. It'd definitely be a trippy game for sure though if it did!
Thanks for all the kind words :D I didn't expect to get this much attention. I just use CG textures, and use any and every texture that has a interesting patterns in them. Here is a low res pallet of what I used.
You're looking for mentorship but maybe you can convince Bruno Camara to do one of his online workshops in English. He sounded alright speaking English in the "How to find your path in CG industry?" hangout presentation. http://brunocamara.com/workshop/

http://3dquakers1.com/webroot5/index.php - Charbel knows his stuff in XSI, I'd assume his Max videos are of the same quality. http://cg-academy.net/dvds_menu_3dsmax.php - All of Paul Neale's stuff on rigging is here. http://paulneale.com/ - Paul's site
You know whats crazy? This isn't real. Its CG. not sure about the other pics you posted, but I suspect they might be too. Regardless they are pretty sweet. bbob - so it looks like Assasin's Creed 2 is pretty accurate :D
