Re: Default normal map texture out is RGB+A, how come?
Other texture maps (height, AO, etc) are often packed into the normal map alpha channel. If you don't need to put anything in A, you can change the dropdown to RGB. -

Check to see if your model has multiple UV sets, and delete any extra UVs or try changing from UV 1 to UV 2 in the Materials window -> Texture panel. -

You can drag and drop to the high and low slots (or any other position in the scene list). Drag to just below and slightly to the right of either, you'll see a little green highlight that shows you where the object will be dropped.
