I second the use of clay brushes. Claytubes + Smooth/TrimDyn are what I spend a majority of time using to build forms. If I'm ever having a bit of trouble, I look at speed-sculpts of what I'm trying to replicate. 9 times out of 10, it provides insight and inspiration into the sculpting process.
