Regarding the cloth in the witcher my guess is that they could have used an Oren-Nayar diffuse shading model. It looks very good on rough surfaces like cloth and stone. Perhaps the 290x does - my 4870, 7870, and now 380 do not / did not. So warn against 290x's (if they are in fact the cause) in the same way nvidia 970's are to be avoided in Substance Painter (or in general due, to the memory problem).
