The spirals are an issue, it's just a hard problem to solve automatically. Giving the algorithm facegroups/materials to cut the mesh up into multiple parts and to mark hard edges helps, but it's still hard to get a usable mesh out without manual fixing. The algorithm is not in the image, the image serves as data for the algorithm - the algorithm reads the image and converts the data into a 3d mesh (or converts a 3d mesh into an image). The linked paper goes into the specifics, but not entirely - you'll need some serious skills to reproduce it. -

actually - that stuff is probably not a big problem to train for. it's pretty close to solved using conventional algorithms - the biggest issue is really in layout. it's still prohibitively expensive to train - its 10000% cheaper to brute force it with a team of artists than it is to invest in training a model at present -

for me the value is in improving on the algorithms for tasks like denoising, height map/normal map generation, light removal, edgedetection, tiling etc. These are things that can't be done perfectly with generalised standard algorithms as they require intuition about the content of the image. ML models can provide that… -
