Understand normal maps as instructions on how to reflect light back into cameras. Instead of say Pixel at 0,0 reflect Red 255 at all times (Diffuse map), a TANGENT (this is the one that doesn't freak out based on world coordinates) normal map does something similar, but to light. I bought one of those and returned it just as fast. It is not very good, at all. Dead pixels all over the place, not entirely accurate, bad driver support and very springy tip. The screen is highly pixelized so when you draw on it, it doesnt look right. I would rather suggest people get many of the used 15-18 inch cintiqs… -

try to drop it it in Blender compositing pane and try "normalize" and RGBcurve nodes. if keyshot write depth in mm or inches your depth picture could have pixel values in 10000's range ,way beyond what Phshop could adjust for. Example ? Is this 1 bit alpha ? I don't think there's any magic beside using photoshop resampling algorithms. Bicubic messes a bit border pixels but the result is smoother. Yeah the compression for diffuse textures is sometimes pretty horrible, and you can't use an uncompressed format like you can with normalmaps.
