Did a little work on the global lighting. It's kind of tricky to have a lighting that works well for both normal view and zoomed in/cinematic view. Specially with the lack of a good ToD system like in Cryengine. :/

the light shafts i actually misread as some sort of sprinkler system. id just keep it pretty solid with a low opacity, and toss some floaty dirt bits in there to break it up a bit.
Hmm I was working on the particles for this but since Valve are telling people not to do anything with particles for New Bloom I think it would be wise to not do them for this either until their new system is in place
No. Not the way you described. Please take a look at how they are used and where, it should give you a clear answer. FumeFX can be rendered to images like TGA and then used with the particle system in Unity.

3.5 to v4 wouldn't be too bad. 3.5 introduced a new brush system and several new brushes which wouldn't get covered, and changed a few other things you might need.
