Depends on the bone system. Are you using Biped? CAT? Bones? With the default Bones system, you can use Bone Tools. -

Was Demo 2 an in game Particle/Physics system? Not certain if was in game or not? If these are in game physics and particle systems they seem more advanced then HL2. -

Xrefs in Max are a very old system, that is pretty broken on many levels and was more or less replaced by the "Container" system. -
