I think for painting the layers interactively, one can build a realtime shader using shaderFX, and then use them for a mental ray material -

no not at all. more often than not your model will look better realtime.. either max viewport (with 3point or xoliul shader), marmoset, etc. -

I'd recommend using a realtime shader, like Ben Cloward's. Closer to real in-game performance than using Max's scanline renderer. -

The grass looks a bit too detailled for realtime... My wallpaper is stil the same old. Plus desktop links to Dawn of War and Crimsonland. -
