LOL. I said the same thing when I first tried it. Was rather disappointed that it wasn't 1st or 3rd person realtime control on it. It's still annoying I suppose, but you do control it indirectly still (double click here/there, etc).
1st question possibly depends on the engine the model is destined for.. some engines dont like open meshes. But here ive seen models combined. 2. no idea myself, but i wouldnt quite rely on a pretty render to push your work.

make 1st UV for the diffuse etc. maps (overlap and mirror as much as you like), 2nd UV for the baked shadows (every polygon gets its own space in the UV). Bake shadows to UV2. http://www.3dtutorialzone.com/tutorial?id=48
To be honest the rates that Jon posted seem incredibly high. A 3rd world country of artists are really getting paid those rates? Seems unlikely. Those overseas rates look more accustomed to what freelancers in 1st world countries would be getting.
