Impressive job! These 360s certainly enable getting right in there to inspect stuff up close. Side note, your project has re-lit a spark too tackle something like this which imo an enviro will definitely push one to the limit.
Yeah the pilot is just using the same shader to render as the vehicle, so his colorscheme/shading style is not set yet, not done with the highpoly for him yet : ) As for the background its just temp, used an existing enviro I had and just tinted it : )
It sounds to me that as a realistic 3D enviroment artist, the best course of action as well as the most effective use of my time would not be found in the traditional mediums. I should no longer persue it. Does that sound correct? i just want to clarify.
Well I suppose it depends on the studio, wether or not it is the main app for a given pipeline and exporters, and so on ... One thing for sure : the license server for 2009 still runs, that's good! I am just envious of the viewport canvas and the mud link but that's okay :)

David Gurrea has a ton of hand-painted enviro textures on his site. http://www.davegh.com/blade/davegh.htm Funny (?) story behind his site, he wasn't paid for his work, so he put on the web for all to use.
