Check out Headus UVLayout. This looks like it's all quads so you should be able to do a rectilinear relax which will give you perfect straight strap uv's.
looks fairly similar to the "unfold strip from loop" button in the unwrap uv modifier. minus the relax part. unless im totally misunderstanding what the peel uv's does.
Alright this is how it's coming so far, i've got all the subtools ironed out and can finally just relax and sculpt whimsically. https://www.dropbox.com/s/h07n9v12jhy4ia6/beast_WIP.JPG
Days off work are for relaxing, and lazily starting fantasy illustrations. ehh, didnt co,me out too well, i get bogged down trying to understand color.
Put your technical questions here. I just run over these areas with a relax smooth (shft+contact then release shft then brushn over surface), or carefully polish then smooth if needed.
why are his legs like that? will he be doing that pose much when rigged? model in a relax kinda average pose close to where the model will be at when rigged most often
Depending on what the intended use of the mesh is though, you may want to rework some of the areas for better deformation, or relax it and aim for a more consistent density if you plan on sculpting.
