Very impressive! Large scale environments can be very daunting. I would love to see where you started with materials, I'm still getting used the UDK material nodes, if you have any references you've learned from and like to share that would be awesome! -

As soon as youve got to grips with the viewport controls and the modifier stacks you should be good to go! I only just recently made a push to learn max myself, and it can be pretty daunting but just stick with it and I'm positive you'll have everything sorted soon enough :) -

From the front, their legs are pretty straight from the elbow down (check out this lil guy). As for the head, I think the snort could be a little rounder, but you mentioned that you havnt done the nose yet. Also on finding reference, Google image search is your friend! -
