I just want to add to this that 3Dsmax 2014 exports FBX files incorrectly. This exact problem will happen because of it. So use anything but 2014 to export FBX to also fix it.
Quick update regarding versions of the tools used: Max and Maya: 2016 .fbx version 2014/2015 updates are installed I've just checked this on 3ds max 2014 and it's the same.
First quick and dirty (ha...) grunge pass. and new plants. Also texture maps are currently at 1024 x 1024 and plant-stuffs are on a separate texture sheet at 512x512 (for the moment).

How's mobu 2014? 2013 was broken as hell, had to revert back to 2012. Try 2014 first and see if it works fine, 2012 should be cheaper and more stable/ less buggy
If it is only a 2014 problem that would make me beloved that it is caused by the modeling toolkit in Maya 2014. Make sure the auto on feature of it is turned off, since it could be resetting that option everytime.
