I seem to remember that the default player height is 200units. If you want to make your objects fit a character that's around 160-180cm, you might have to scale everything up by around 10-15% to match.
It's not free. however you can jump onto adobe cloud. and pay $15 - $20ish a month as a teacher or a student and get the whole adobe package. just remember its not commercial licence. http://www.adobe.com/products/creativecloud.edu.html
@visionarymindful I had a 17" inspiron that lasted 10 years but that was a long time ago and maybe I got lucky. There are a lot of 15" powerful laptops that are less than $1000 if you're willing to go with a smaller screen.

I'm getting an error when trying to load substances into Max 15, I can load the substances that come with it, but not my own. The error message is 'Failed to load substance' Is this because of the PBR set up isn't compatible?
