If you re-read this thread, I recall examples almost exactly like this. "Add more geo" works pretty well for most simple cylinders... ;)

Yeah I did the same for the Prince of Persia CG character. In Max you can also add a shell modifier and make sure there's proper overlapping and such

I'd prolly just use a helix, then add a sweep modifier to it. Select a custom shape that got nice supporting edges, and angle it slightly in the sweep settings.

If you have enough segments on the initial cylinder you don't even have to add suporting geo on the sides. http://edgesize.com/captures/dildo_001.obj

I think the question was more, how do you add more geo to an already created part of the model? Where its not just a straight cylinder.

because you only see the back of them, do either 1 with custom material in engine, to add dirt and colors. Or 2-3 with different textures.

Use more sides in your cylinder. Try a 64 sided cylinder. Don't add support edges, let the edges of the cylinder be your support edges.

You can write script that adds shell modifier, assigns different ID to backface polygons, selects those polygons by mat ID and deletes them.
