I've used Max and Maya. I focus almost entirely on Maya now. The only thing Max has that I'd like to see in Maya is the shell modifier. I also learned MEL and that helps a lot with plug-ins and other scripting. I do a lot of physics and dynamcics animation and Maya doesn't require FumeFX, etc.
@JohnnyRaptor: it looks like you have the MEL script (which just provides the interface) but not the actual plugin. Make sure the .mll plugin file is in your plug-ins directory, and that it is set to load in Maya (go to Window>Settings/Preferences>Plug-in Manager and make sure "loaded" and "auto load" are both checked for…
Any way to do this in Maya LT? Nightshade uses Python, so it won't work. I downloaded and tried an old standalone mel script version of the Nightshade texel density script, and it didn't work for some reason either. Edit: Found it! in the new UV editor's UV Toolkit: Transform> Tools> Texel Density> set
I'm experiencing crashes on maya 17 update 3, was wondering if it's even supposed to run on this version? I created a box, bevel with 1 segment, soften all edges, then select object and run command "bnormal -v 1" in the MEL box. am I doing anything wrong? that's all the info I have to share..
Did you look into the MEL Script Editor? It´s like a log for your actions, just use the polySlideEdge and you should see what Maya did? I would look into it, but i don´t use maya anymore Edit: Have a look here: http://download.autodesk.com/us/maya/2010help/Commands/polySlideEdge.html
i have relly enjoyed them. I have a lot. mostly maya for getting to know maya, and a lot for mel scripting and rigging and such. helped me a ton. also helpoed me to learn zbursh and the likes. some are crap though, but I find even if I come away with one tip, the 60 bucks was worth it.
One funny thing I thought is where they talk as if Modo invented scripting languages... the host talks about everyone else having to do C++ plugins... they're speaking like maxscript, MEL script etc. don't exist :) Well, it is a Luxology podcast after all, I guess they always want to push their product.
I will look into it, but from what I can tell, Maya Lt doesn't have python integration. Therefore you would have to find out a way to get python into Maya. If its possible.. I have no idea. I sure as hell am not gonna convert the script over to Mel. Sorry :( maybe they will add it in the next versions.
Thank you guys for all your feedback! Some good advise there - really appreciate it. @Tenchi: To model the hair I used GMH Mel Script ( Geometries to Maya Hair Script) developed by Phung Dinh Dzung, which converts geometries hair patches to Maya Hair As for the shader I used Pavel Ledin's mental ray hair shader
