There is no "best way" to build a forrest, it all depends on your needs and your schedule. You just gotta start somewhere http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kkk58o2ykR0&feature=player_detailpage#t=237s
make long textures (EG 256x1024 for 4 x 256 tiling tex) and split mesh in one direction... its pissing in the wind unless we know a few more details though
At the rate prices are dropping and speed is increasing for SDD drives, in less than 2 years there will be cheap drives that are faster than 3Gb/s hopefully at some decent sizes (250 gigs plz?)
agreed. Which is why you are maybe having to look at it an extreme angle to see the reflections. A flat normal map color is 128, 128, 255. Could you display your normal for us?
i would say instead of 2 2048x2048s i would use a handful of 1024s 512s and 256s Since a lot of this whole scene should just be tileable textures and then adding some decals.
Thanks man. 512*512 for the body and 512*256 for the heads/weapons. And well, I've been a 40k nut for a long time. I know everyone makes 40k models, but why the hell not?
try keeping the size of the peices proportional so the same amount of deatil is spread over each part of the skin hmmmm i dont think the head map needs to be a 512 and can be a 256
Thanks HP! It was requested that I be as generous as possible with a lot of the little bits, but I agree, if this were a real game asset a good optimization pass would be very important. Getting 25k triangles for my budget was like winning the lottery and not knowing what to do with all of the money.
