over on cgsoc mxs seg there a thread on this... with scripts. The principle is to copy the normals into a map channel, edit the mesh and restore the normals from the map channel and rely on the interpolation.
There's a script that creates perfect circles from edge selections: vimeo.com/65246315 Maybe you can use that to fix distorted edge loops when you need to.
I don't quite understand what you are trying to do. I don't think how you'll be able to print "theVar.name". The value is not defined anywhere in the script.
Well, What i want to do is mainly what i've outlined in the OP everything else is a cakewalk compared to it and wouldn't take me that long to script and test.
Found it! It's called "Advanced Paint" and it's a script someone wrote. You can find it here (Site is in Russian, but the program is in English). This spaces it evenly and aligns it to the normal of the surface.
