Well, do you want to continue on as an animator? Or do you enjoy being a TA? If you have the work to support a TA I say cut one together. If you want to be an animator, nothing wrong with showing some TA stuff in your reel. In games, an animator well versed in MEL is a big plus.
For Animation Maya is a standart but dont forget the Mel Script as a great plus. Many companys who use Maya have their own Scripts for her Pipeline. A negative point are the tools. correction, smooth edges out of split poly tool, not extrude edge! i'd love a modification to split poly like that, which is why i'm being particular. i think the weight colors might be native to maya's code, so no amount of MEL digging will reveal anything. on the other hand for split poly it might.

I've used Max and Maya. I focus almost entirely on Maya now. The only thing Max has that I'd like to see in Maya is the shell modifier. I also learned MEL and that helps a lot with plug-ins and other scripting. I do a lot of physics and dynamcics animation and Maya doesn't require FumeFX, etc.
