My current technique when updating a material in painter that I just edited in designer is as follows; - Locate material in shelf - Rightclick, reload - Select layer where it's used and drag it over the material slot Is that normal? or is there a way to make it automatically update?
@chris the reload should not be needed for users, since they are not editing the code, it should be fine to just let python grab what is already in memory from first import to run. reload() when not needed just adds to startup time of the script.

Many apps have an auto-reload feature. As soon as you save your PSD, the 3d app sees the datetime change, and so it reloads it. Dual monitor setup helps a lot with this... Photoshop on one side, 3ds Max or Maya on the other.
