Wouldn't Autodesk Photomodeler be what you're looking for? Taking 360 images of your item and then projecting them in a cartesian plane from the software? Or did I misunderstand?
I agree with you Sprunghunt especially if I am doing it in max. I would model it flat and then put a bend of 360 degrees on it. And put a shell on it in the end

+1 for ASUS here, I used a 1366 Socket ASUS with my i7 and it's been fantastic. Also IIRC, the pricing wasn't too dissimilar to the Gigabyte counterparts.
