That all depends on the meshes. In the example I cooked up just now it never went much higher than ~300 polys. Make sure you are using a PRO-Boolean and not just a boolean. ProBooleans recalcuate the triangulation and vert count on each frame, I think regular booleans just keep multiplying

Interesting. I spilt a bit of water in mine. Won't turn on now. Been quoted £300-£500 by a repair shop to fix (it's worth £500 working). Can't afford that, so might try your oven trick.... On the positive side I've learnt to never buy an expensive laptop again.
Does anyone know a font that would be good for the embossed text on this weapon? I'm having trouble finding a one that looks right. I'm not even sure what the text its supposed to say. I believe it refers to the .303 caliber of this gun's ammunition but I can't make out the words.
Also, the other scene may have a more optimized basemesh. In ZB, when you rotate, ZB will dynamically switch the subdivision as low as it needs to maintain a smooth framerate. If your lowest subdiv is 3mil, obviously that is going to be a lot laggier than a 25mil subdivided mesh with a basemesh that is 30k etc.
After days spent on the UVs and trying to bake the normal map and AO I think my only solution is giving this a Madworld looking vibe to make the normals look decent. These caps are the lp (30k polys) with normals and AO exagerated: I'm probably gonna add some details in Painter.
