If you are using Max 2015 or newer you can use the Select and Place tool combined with Center Face snap.

Delete history, if that doesn't work...export as an OBJ into a new scene...its a weird bug that 2015 seems to have contracted.

In max, you need to apply a UVW Xform modifier and set the U Tile to 0.5, then apply an Unwrap UVW at 2048x1024.

Isn't this standard Maya behavior when selecting faces in the UV Editor? At least, in versions prior to 2015 where they removed it.
