With the move tool, holding c allows you to snap to edges or curves. xyShrinkwrap (it's on creativecrash, which seems to be down right now) will snap a selection of verts to another object. -

In max it's a primitive shape called a geosphere, I thought Maya had this but it might have been a script I grabbed, its been a while but I remember it being there. It looks like CreativeCrash has something like it if it hasn't been added in recent years or for some stupid reason they took it out?… -
