That's an interesting idea killingpeople, the result looks a lot better than the specular map only. Maybe a combination of the 2 would look even better to tone down the contrast on the darker side of the cylinder.
finished the pixie in a day total of 4 days in total to do (well a day and a half of modeling a full day of texturing and like a good 2 hours at night or so to uv un wrap and all)
trying to learn zbrush 2 done in about 1h30, trying to figure out how the different brushes work. now i need to learn the basics of the projection master and masks :/ anyways, that was pretty fun.
Long time no model pimping :/ About 2 hours work last night: It is female - gonna work on the hair today >_< Modelled in a strip modelling method (first time) and I'm enjoying it doing that way

i liked wanked out a leilei for unreal tournament (and half-life, but not exported to that yet) in 2 days of boredom. Looks weird mainly due to ue1's crazy lighting model. Skin is as flat as it gets.
