First use 3points Shader. http://www.3pointstudios.com/3pointshader_lite.shtml Second. What version of max and how are your viewport drivers configured? 2012's viewports broke to hell when it comes to previewing normal maps.
A little off-topic but I am pretty sure WW1:Source is still alive, they've been making some good progress lately, infact, they have a different MG08 showcased on their moddb made by someone else.
