I think you're approaching the problem in a way that makes it more difficult than it needs to be. you can get away without doing anything custom in these simple examples I generate a random luminance per cell (you could do this with flood fill or any of the tile nodes) apply a curve/level/histogram scan - all of these… -

A good trick in 3ds max is build your block out first then add an edit poly mod and do all your extra edges such as supporting edges in the mod then on top of that add your turbosmooth mod. Then to get the low poly you just delete the turbosmooth mod and the edit poly mod with all your supporting edges in it. -

Mud ground WIP, part deux. Might make another variation with the mud ground. Mud Mud (slightly different form) + grass Grass + some mud I'll eventually play around with these, blending the materials in the scene. Still refining this one, but don't want to get too stuck on it. -

mudbox here.. with clean meshes and mud confrom uvs its really stable... if not you are in hell... (mud 2012 checks your file during import) mud creates .bak files beside the .mud file as backup... just rename the file to .mud... 64bit version is much stabler than 32...
