2) max9 by default disables backface culling (right click-> object properties (or edit)). you can manually enable it again there.

I suppose I'd also have to enable plugins but embedded WMP crashes my browser so I won't try that.

There is a hdri backdrop plugin (comes with unreal but maybe you need to enable it) that is better than this, and works in a similar way.

Yes it is possible, you might want to enable 16bit normal map buffer in UE as well as it is off by default.

Perhaps a viewport 2.0 issue? Have you tried enabling the legacy viewport via the environment variable, and using that?
