I tried various ways to stop a loop, and I tried this. It creates a NGONS underneath, but since it's completely flat, it shouldn't cause any problems. I think I'm not sure it works everywhere though. -

Most shields wouldn't be constructed like that without a trim around the outer edges. The typical trim exists for a reason namely to reinforce the strength of the shield so that it wouldn't break down as easily. A few tips because I don't have time to write up a monster post. - Trim everything. - Trim is easy to make, Select an edge and covert to shape, turn that new spline into a rectangle, generate mapping coordinates and you have instant trim. You can do the same to create drain pipes, wires vent shafts, cross beams bla bla… -
