I tend to believe, that he thinks, that we are modelling with the subdivisions applied(non-reversible). And the only difference i know between modo subD and others is that modo uses a slightly improved subD algorithm.

Try model this decoration on the plane and then bend it to the cylinder :) If you know the diameter of the cylinder, then you have to make the ornament plate as long as diameter*3.14 - just a school math :) This way seems to be rather simple.
I usally create these kinds of shapes with floating geometry. I prefer to do as much as possible inside of softimage or any other modelling package. So I have less post-work to do.

Could you show your current progress? A big mistake is to model everything as one piece. So try to split the mesh into its parts. Parts are: -Screws -Baseplates -The bolt that holds the lever -The lever

Is there a procedural way of modeling wrinkles and bandages in 3Ds Max (Check out the red cricles). I want to make a high poly version of this and bake it onto the low poly when it comes to normal mapping.
