I will definitely look at those tutorials. I tried dither and upped the sampling to 25x and this is what I get when I captured the image. -

Tip: Use textures with power of two dimensions (256, 512, 1024, 2048 and so on) Max doesn't render that well textures that don't follow this! -
Re: Offset World in Max vs. Maya
Not sure about the max tool but to do the above, press ctrl + t. then click on one of the manipulators axis' and type in 256 (maya defaults to cms).
