I think it's the SSAO. Very characteristic of UDK, that "everything that's not convex can have a big black smudge" post process. Most scenes look far better with it off.
please don't ever use a characteristic texture made by strictly following a tutorial, especially a well known tutorial. in this case it also just doesn't fit with the rest of the scene.

that was in the book pyramids if I remember correctly. Alot of the discworld involves anthropomorphic characteristics though, like the clouds even have personality haha
In a PBR engine does applying specular maps make it work in legacy manner or does it have some new characteristics? I see in UE4 there is a node for specular and specular power maps.
