Blender has gotten a lot of new features the past year. It is only natural that it would suffer some performance decreases no? I'm no dev but content implements usually come with more overhead so slower performance in some area's where it hasn't integrated as nicely with the existing code base. Some legacy code will…
I'm getting concerned that 2.8 will never actually get released. It's been in development for about two years now, and I watched a recent conference in which they said it was about a sixth of the way done. Which means we could expect it in about 10 more years. Assuming they actually even stick to it that long, everything…
You can't paint vertex alpha but you can paint a vertex group and use that as an alpha. It's a known limitation and I hope they get rid of it but it shouldn't keep you from doing anything especially if you're using any render system that makes use of nodes where you can get any vertex group weight you want.

thanks for the links, used the cgcookie stuff for the most part, getting the hang of the basics (made some rivets and bolts to add to HP meshes nothing fancy), moving onto some fancier stuff tomorrow i keep loosing menus etc all over the place, its way better than it used to be (pretty much feels like a different package…
The bigest problem is that Blender doesn't allow you to customize the shortcuts. The tools are there...but it's very hard to get to them in an efficient manner.
