ok .. you dont need to change materials/models/heros. you just import, then copy the 3 files (mdl, vtx vvd ) on models/items/yourhero to models/heros/yourhero rename the old ones to something else, or delete them and rename your 3 files to the former ones, replacing them. Now the game will read the mdl and will be pinted…
Well I think ur textures need a texture so to speak, ppl can only guess the material but its not rly visible from the textures like where is the wood stuff and the plushy stuff and so on.

What you have there is a 2-sided material. If you import that to the game, it'll be invisible from the front but visible from the back. If I were you, I would slightly extrude the cape inwards and then bridge the polys.
You need the game to get the CS SDK, but you can use the Source Filmmaker one. It's the best right now after the update and you can even load the dota 2 materials :) EDIT: The viewer is fixed
This is also true for those of you using 3D Studio Max. Make sure your model has the same name as the file name you plan to use for the .mdl and that it also has a material that corresponds to the .vmt file.
