If you're exporting your FBX with ASCII format, then try to use Binary instead. ASCII will increase your file size to be unreasonably high which Painter don't like. Same mesh same tris count different FBX format can make the file size ~2GB(ASCII) to ~500kMB(Binary), roughly estimation.
If you plan to sculpt in mudbox or modo 501 it would be a good idea to UV before sculpting that way if you want to do any texture painting on the high resolution mesh it won't be a problem. UVing a high resolution mesh is generally pretty difficult...
Doom 3 uses 2000 polies and normalmaps, 5000 is something you'd throw at HL2. UE3.0 also uses Normalmaps and your model doesn't look like you're going for normalmapping...
Max 90%, Maya 10%. I just know Max too damn well, and although I know the basics in Maya, it usually takes me five times as long to do anything. However XSI at $500 for personal use is getting quite tempting, and that program's workflow seems very logical from what I have seen.
Be careful, I had a 500GB hard drive (Western Digital if that matters)... it decided one day that it was going to pack up. I then had this "It also doesnt appear in my computer anymore but does in device manager."... would hear the noise of it connecting even, but unable to access it. I would also suggest taking it apart…
