In general ones that can handle the new four cc "DX10". Most of viewers and plugins can read the dds when it contains the new extended directx 10 header. -

delete your 3dsmax.ini file (or rename the extension to something clever, like .bak, .old, .wtf, .gay, .etc). that contains all your preferences and non-default settings. -
